My Dark Ages were a three year period from the Spring of 1996 through the Spring of 1999. I worked for a software company based in Cambridge, MA, and my department had been transferred to an office park in North Reading. It was an awful place – grey, sunless warrens of cubicles, in an ugly brick box surrounded by parking lots. I had to buy a car to get there, and I ended up with a haggard old Lincoln Town Car. I loved my work, but I hate driving, and I hate suburbs. Worse, having a car made it possible for me to drive everywhere – no destination was so close that I couldn’t drive there.
