Our first day walking together, we got hilariously lost leaving León, and wandered rather aimlessly for some time, with Julie slowly abandoning unwanted stuff from her backpack at strategic places along our route. Guidebooks, shampoo, and more were left in our wake. Eventually we found the trail, which was a bit of a disappointment. I had been filling Julie’s head with images of fields of wildflowers in the summer sun, and what she got that first day was a gravel path on the shoulder of a highway, in a cold rain. I was worried she was going to stab me, but when I started apologizing, she smiled and replied this was a treat. “We don’t get to walk this close to the highway back home!” |

Don’t believe it. Wishful thinking during one of the few dry moments that first day. Note the scenic highway in background. | ||
